Revisiting Old Work

A pleasant surprise

The other day I was browsing through old files of projects I’ve started through the years. I seem to write in fits and starts, not often finishing what I begin. But there was one story, still unfinished, that I had forgotten about. You don’t always know what to expect when revisiting old work, but this was a pleasant surprise!

This is something I started working on way back in 2019 (pre-COVID feels like a different world!) but it’s a story that I love. I wanted to write a dark retelling of Red Riding Hood that still has the vibes of an old school fairytale. I went back through what I had, made a few minor changes, and the ending I had in mind came back to me.

It would be the perfect thing to work on in autumn and winter, so maybe I have a low-key project to work on during NaNoWriMo? I don’t plan to write an entire novel, but I would like to finish this short story! Currently I have around 2.3k words but I expect a finished version might be closer to 4k or 5k. Have you ever revisited old work and found something unexpectedly inspirational? Maybe finishing this would give me the momentum I need to get back to the novel I started last November!

I thought it would be fun to share a brief excerpt from the beginning…
